How to use POWER Wrist Builders® in a lesson?
"When I began taking lessons, my teacher would hand me his aluminum sticks
at the beginning of the lesson, and for the next 4-5 minutes I would do a simple
warm-up routine of single strokes and rudiments. Once that warm-up routine was
completed, I would begin my lesson with my standard 2B wooden sticks. This 'loosening'
up provided a quick way of getting ready for the lesson.
The routine I followed started by playing four single strokes with each hand,
starting slowly and increasing speed gradually. After a minute or so I would
play three with each hand, and then two, and finally one stroke with each hand.
I would then reverse the process and play two, three, and then four strokes
in tempo. The final exercise included a left hand (traditional grip) single
stroke exercise to build control and strength in the left hand. This simple
routine was all that was needed to loosen up.
I eventually purchased a pair of the aluminum sticks to use at home in my
own practice routines. I began warming up as I did for each lesson, but then
began playing open and closed rudiments (slow to fast and back to slow). This
exercise would continue for 10-15 minutes or until I began to get tired. That
is the real key to practicing with the POWER Wrist Builders®
. Don't over practice at any one time. Use them as you would use a set of
bar-bells. Practice a routine and then stop. Play the same routine again. Practice
in sets like a weight lifter practices repetitions and sets. Use the POWER
Wrist Builders® like bar-bells for your wrists and fore arms.
Remember, any exercise can be beneficial if done properly and with common
sense. Likewise, any exercise can be detrimental if done improperly or abused.
Listen to your body when practicing. If you become tired within in a minute
or two, stop playing. All your body is trying to say is `take it easy, slow
down'. Take your time in building up your practice routine and time.
A simple routine.
Try playing the simple routine outlined above. For example, try playing four
single strokes with each hand at a slow tempo. Play this routine for 100 counts.
Then reduce the four single strokes to three with each hand for a hundred counts,
then two, then one and back up the routine until four strokes is reached again.
You will have played over seven hundred strokes on this repetition. Now stop
and rest for a minute. You have completed one repetition.
Variations on this simple routine include starting at five or six strokes
per hand. Use your imagination or the normal practice routine that your instructor
has created in your lessons.
When you get tired...stop...or 15 minutes maximum.

try the same routine at the same tempo and gradually increase your repetitions.
The second week you will be able to play two sets before you feel tired. That
will indicate that you are gaining strength and endurance.
An additional variation on this same simple routine is to increase the speed
that you play the single stoke exercise. Or start at six strokes per hand rather
then four. Once this type of routine has been accomplished, try playing the
rudiments with the POWER Wrist Builders® . Practice no more
then 15 minutes a day, depending on your current progress and strength.
